Abstract:

Evolution of the Solid Waste Management in Venezuela A quantitative and qualitative evaluation of some aspects related to solid waste management in Venezuela is presented, such as: generation; recycling and recovery; collection, transfer and transport; and final disposal. This evaluation, jointly with an analysis of the principles involved in the integrated management of solid wastes, allows to present a diagnosis of the actual situation and to establish the basis of an Integrated Solid Waste Management System adapted to the technical, economical, social and environmental conditions of the country. The proposed strategy, based on a systemic approach, will be an useful tool for the regional authorities, responsible of the solid waste handling, in the solution of problems caused by these wastes; it promotes changes in the traditional scheme of collection and disposal in order to preserve natural resources and public health, fundamental basis for a sustainable delopment.
