Andes mountains and human dimensions of global change: An overview

Abstract:

Today, there is a need on minimizing the impacts on mountain landscapes that are subjected to climate change caused by the global warming. Thus, the research policy has always been emphasizing on the physical dimension, specifically on the cryosphere with glacial retreat and glacier ablation as well as on the hydrosphere with lack or rain-fed snow, erratic precipitation, diminishing water bodies and minimized aquifers. In addition, the human factor has recently been added as a major consideration for the understanding of the landscape change as well as on the recent emphasis for funded research. As a solution, the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) has organized an international meeting which had a general theme of Global Climate Change which aims to analyze the status quo as well as to prepare on the possible events that may occur in relation to the climate change effect. In addition, a workshop has been created out of the meeting which aims to improve the capacity of human dimension scientists that will advance the global change research in the mountain regions of Latin America as well as to improve the impact of science towards mountain sustainable development.
