Experimental demonstration of transmission of High Definition Television signal using a microwave photonic notch filter

Abstract:

This work describes an experimental demonstration of transmission of High Definition Television signal using a microwave photonic filter in an optical fiber communication system. The transmission is carried out through 25-km of single-mode standard fiber. The effect of a photonic filter (notch filter), is generated by the use of a distributed feedback laser emitting at 1550 nm. The use of this wavelength causes that the chromatic dispersion parameter of the optical fiber be considerable, generating a periodic notch filter. The electrical bandwidth of each notch is in the order of GHz. Transmission of TV signal is carried out in the first notch window. The effect of notch filter is corroborated by means of a set of simulations with various fiber lengths. A potential application of this technique lies in the field of optical telecommunications to deliver services as Internet, TV, and data.
