Experimental replacement of a cervical esophageal segment with lyophilized human dura mater tubing
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to demonstrate that lyophilized human dura mater tubing can serve as a cervical esophagus. We implanted a lyophilized dura mater flexible tube 4 cm long by 2 cm wide in the cervical esophagus of ten dogs that we monitored and then killed 3 months after implantation. The histological study was performed with scanning electron microscopy, where we observed mucosal re-epithelialzation and regeneration with fibrous connective tissue formation in the esophageal prosthesis. We found mild stenosis in 40% that did not disturb food passage, except for solids. Our research offers a new surgical alternative for patients with benign or malignant esophageal stenosis, especially in the cervical region. © 1987 Springer-Verlag.
