Experimental study of acoustic emissions preceeding granular avalanches

Abstract:

Avalanches of granular media are mainly characterized by the observation and measurement of the main angles corresponding to the initial the movement of a group beads, followed by the bulk movement of a large part of the grains. These characteristics do not give any information about the rearrangements of the grains within the layers of granular beads. As any movement of a grain produces a deformation of the structure, a sound that propagates in the granular medium is to be expected. This work presents an acoustical experimental study of the precursor sounds in avalanches of spherical granular glass beads. The acoustic emissions were recorded with two piezoelectric transducers placed on the lower part of the layer of beads. The results provide information about the avalanche precursor's occurrence interval, rearrangements and trigger angle with a new methodology.
