Exploratory study of the behavior of lipidic profile, malondialdehyde and nitric oxide in individuals of the Yukpa ethnic group from Zulian state, Venezuela

Abstract:

Introduction: an abnormal lipidic profile is a risk indicator for cardiovascular diseases associated to atherosclerosis. On the other hand, alterations oxidation/antioxidation balance are characteristicals of cardiovascular diseases. Zulian region, with great ethnic diversity, is an ideal place to study the behaviour of coronary disease's risks factors and the effect of alimentary transitions on these. Objective: To study the behaviour of lipidic variables, malondyaldehyde (MDA) and Nitric Oxide (ON) in individuals belonging to the Yukpa ethnic group and to compare them with individuals of Venezuelan mixed race. Materials and Methods: 55 healthy adults of both sexes belonging to the Yukpa ethnic group and 55 venezuelan mixed race individuals were randomly chosen. A blood sample was drawn in fasting state from each patient to be used in the determination of MDA, ON and lipidic profile Results: HDL-c Levels were low (37,1 ± 12,4 mg/dl and 41,3 ± 11,5 mg/dl) for both races and the rest of the lipidic variables were found within the normal range. On the other hand, significant differences in NO (44,6 ± 27,2 uM and 35,5 ± 12,6 uM; p=0,027) were observed in individuals of yukpa ethnic group vs. Individuals of mixed race. MDA levels did not show significant between both groups. Conclusion: Individuals from el Tokuko present Low isolated HDL-c and ON levels, lower than individuals of mixed race. The difference of ON concentrations between both populations could be the cause of factors not yet determined that could be related with the life style of each population, because of this, other epidemiology studies are necessary in order to solve this behavior.
