Exploring galaxy evolution in the M101 group with Apertif
Abstract:
The environment of galaxies plays an important role in their evolution, since galaxies in dense environments tend to be more bulge dominated, less gas rich and tend to have lower star formation rates. These effects are especially pronounced in galaxy clusters where gas can be easily removed from galaxies trough tidal interactions and ram pressure stripping. Some of these effects are already affecting galaxies in less dense environments, such as galaxy groups. To better understand this pre-processing of galaxies, we need to have a good understanding of the gas removal and accretion processes in all types of environments. The M101 galaxy group is a very nearby loose galaxy group, with M101 as its most massive central galaxy. The group also contains several smaller late-type and dwarf galaxies.
