Expressions of anxiety in children from 8 to 10 years in Cuenca-Ecuador
Abstract:
Childhood anxiety manifestations are a risk factor for developing anxiety disorders in other developmental periods. The research explores the levels of anxiety, manifestations of the main disorders and associated socio-psychological variables in children aged 8-10 years old from the educational school “Chiquintad” in Cuenca’s city in the period 2016-2017. Material and methods: descriptive, transversal, noninterventional research, 80 boys and girls between 8 and 10 years old (53% female-47% male) completed the SPAS (Infant Anxiety Scale of SPENCE) questionnaire. Results: The mean score obtained was 43.04 (SD= 18.28). 38.97% of the students showed high scores in the subscales. Panic symptoms with agoraphobia and separation anxiety provided the most significant values, followed by obsessivecompulsive disorder. Association between socio-demographic/sociopsychological variables and subscales were found. Conclusions: Significant clinical expressions of anxiety were detected in the children of the educational institution under investigation, with values higher than the regional and local reports.
