Annelids

Abstract:

This chapter provides the information on natural history and taxonomy, anatomy and physiology, environmental disorders, infectious diseases, anesthesia and analgesia, and surgery in annelids. The annelids are a large, diverse group of segmented, wormlike animals that are divided into three main classes: Polychaeta, Clitellata, and Sipuncula. The chapter addresses each of the major classes separately. Contemporary work on the genome of Platynereis dumerilii, a free-living polychaete, has revealed interesting and enlightening information on the annelids' place in the overall taxonomic scheme of the world's animals. Several taxonomically distinct groups have been folded into the class Polychaetea. Most polychaetes have a brain located in the prostomium. Being primarily aquatic, polychaetes are subject to environmental stressors and toxins. The oligochaete nervous system resembles that of the basic polychaete plan except the cerebral ganglion is usually more posterior in oligochaetes.
