Another Look At Bilingualism


Abstract:

New census data indicate that there are slightly less than eight million Americans who identify Spanish as their mother tongue (US Bureau of the Census, 1973A) and slightly over nine million persons who identify themselves as being of Spanish origin (US Bureau of the Census, 1973B). This latter category includes those who, in the 1970 census, identified their origin or descent as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or other Spanish. Taken together these sub-populations comprise our nation's second largest minority. Educationally, Latinos are among the most neglected groups in the nation. This population attains a median level of formal schooling of only 9.1 years (US Bureau of the Census, 1973B) while the corresponding number for the population taken as a whole exceeds the average of a high school education.
