First Report of Alternaria Brown Spot in Cherimoya (Annona cherimola Mill.) Caused by Alternaria alternata in Ecuador


Abstract:

Cherimoya (Annona cherimola Mill.) is native to Central America but is mainly cultivated in South America (Larranaga et al. 2017). This fruit is mostly marketed and consumed in the Andean region for its nutritional properties and sweetness. During the rainy season of 2016 (March to April, September to October) brown spot symptoms were observed on leaves and fruit of cherimoya in the orchards of the Pichincha province. Leaves showed necrotic black-to-brown lesions bordered with chlorotic tissue around the central vein and the apex, and fruit damage was limited to the epidermis. When young fruit was infected it dropped at around 45 days after fruit set. Affected orchards showed up to 50% incidence in fruit infections in 2016 and 2017.
