First Report of Stromatinia gladioli Causing Neck and Corm Rot of Crocus sativus in Spain
Abstract:
Saffron is a spice derived from the dried stigmata of the flowers of saffron crocus (Crocus sativus L.). In late winter and early spring of 2014, a disease of saffron plants was observed in two locations in the provinces of Albacete and Toledo in the region of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). At each location, an area in size between 1,000 and 3,000 m 2 was affected, with plants displaying symptoms of wilting and yellowing. Infected leaf sheaths were reddish to dark brown in color, and corms were rotten with a shredded appearance. To determine the causal agent, isolations were conducted from symptomatic corms and leaf sheath material approximately 3 to 5 mm wide. The material was surface sterilized with sodium hypochlorite solution (2%), rinsed twice in sterile water, and allowed to dry on sterile filter paper prior to plating onto potato dextrose agar (PDA) amended with streptomycin sulfate (0.5 g/liter).
