First report of Burkholderia gladioli as a rice pathogen in Ecuador

Abstract:

Although B. glumae is marked as the main responsible of BPB, B. gladioli is also able to cause this disease in rice 1. Pathogenic B. gladioli has also clinical importance because of the ability of some strains to cause respiratory infections in humans 2. Symptoms of BPB in rice plantations in Palestina city were observed in July 2013 although similar symptoms were first noticed as early as 2012 in other regions of Ecuador. One of the causal agents was recently identified as B. glumae but the presence of other bacteria in BPB rice was also observed 4. Plants showing upright panicles with a grayish-straw color, grain rot, or vain grain were collected from Palestina city. Panicle twigs were cultured on the semi-selective medium PG-Agar and colonies were transferred to PDA to test for fluorescence 3.
