First report of Puccinia thaliae in Canna spp. In Ecuador

Abstract:

The species Canna spp., commonly called achira or chisguas, has flowers with red and yellow petals. This species is used in the design of gardens and parks, or just to decorate indoor rooms with floral arrangements. In the upper and lower leaves of Canna spp., established in gardens of the Universidad Técnica Estatal de Quevedo (UTEQ) we found lesions with yellowish color and powdery appearance. Stereo microscopic and microscopic observations confirmed that the causal organism of the mentioned symptomatology and pathogenicity was the ubkp_redinial phase of P. thaliae, being this the first report of rust in Canna spp. in Ecuador.
