Floristic and phytosanitary aspects of the green areas at santa lucia parish, central area of Maracaibo, Zulia State


Abstract:

The floristic and phytosanitary aspects of the green areas at Santa Lucia parish, Maracaibo, Zulia state were determined from collections of botanical specimens and direct visual assessments, from May 2011 to February 2012. 44 families and 122 species of vascular plants were recognized, being 51.63% native American and 48.36% introduced. The families with the largest taxa number were Arecaceae and Leguminosae with 15 and 12 spp., respectively. Azadirachta indica (Nim), was the most abundant specie with a total of 162 individuals. The most common phytosanitary problems observed were the presence of dead branches (52.08%), conditions for termites (31.25%), damages for “guts” or “broom” (10.41%), gomosis (4.16%) and debarked logs (2.08%). This study can be considered a key tool for developing guidelines for urban management. Is necessary the creation of more green spaces in the parish also the use of less introduced plants.
