Focusing diffraction gratings for integrated optics
Abstract:
Diffraction gratings are widely used for coupling radiation in an optical waveguide and for extracting radiation from the waveguide. Nondiverging (or slightly diverging) beams are necessary to effectively excite optical waveguides. In the present paper, it is proposed to use focusing diffraction gratings of variable period for this purpose. A method of designing such gratings is developed, and the effectiveness of the gratings is assessed.
