Antimicrobial resistance in ophthalmology

Abstract:

Antimicrobial resistance is a rising problem in ophthalmology. Resistant organisms increase the risk of complications and increase the cost of treatment. Knowledge of the epidemiology and mechanisms of resistance can guide the appropriate use of antibiotics in the treatment and prevention of conjunctivitis, keratitis, endophthalmitis and other ocular infectious diseases. The aim of this study is to describe the main mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in ophthalmology and. to carry out an exploratory study which reviewed the national and international literature on the subject. Bacteria acquire the ability to resist the action of antibiotics, using various tools such as genetic variability, changes in the permeability of the inner membrane, extraction of the compound and enzyme inhibition, as well as modifying or ribosomal target altering the composition and content of the bacterial cell wall glycoproteins. A multidisciplinary approach is needed to combat antibiotic resistance and raise the level of knowledge about the topic at physicians, patients and governments. © 2011 Sociedad Mexicana de Oftalmología.
