Framing and Immigration: New Frames in Media and Social Networks

Abstract:

Spain continues to be an attractive destination for the migration of people from all over the world. The presence of immigrants implies an interaction with local people, being able to modify social, cultural and political dynamics; and provoke conflict. The Theory of framing and agenda-setting shows how the way in which news about immigration is presented and its repetition influence the creation of stereotypes and prejudices. The objective of this work is to identify the news frames that predominate in the Spanish media on immigration and the frequency with which the subject appears. A descriptive content analysis was carried out in the media TVE, Telecinco, El País and ABC and social networks Twitter and Facebook, during the 12 months of 2018. A total of 307 news items were coded and analyzed. The results show that immigration is approached as an irregular event, causing feelings of rejection and xenophobia.
