In the other years the frequency was lower. The 57% of deaths maternal occurred in the Azuay, the 28% and the 14% in Morona Santiago. The delay in receiving aid was 59% with a predominance of the lack of decisions (P < 0.001); the delay in seeking help of 57% and explanation was the failure to recognize the problem (P < 0.001), and the delay in reaching aid it was 18%, motivated by the lack of ambulance and access roads. In 34% of deaths there was concurrence of two delays. Conclusion. The increased frequency of maternal mortality in zone 6 was related to the delay in recognizing the problem and delays in making decisions. The lack of ambulance and the lack of access roads were delays of less impact.
