From myself to ourselves: Self-transcendent emotions, collective gatherings and rituals

Abstract:

In this chapter, we present a taxonomy of human emotions that allows individuals to transcend their self-oriented perceptions, needs and cognitions, and connect with larger social groups. These emotions, known as self-transcendent emotions, emphasise the relational aspects between the individual and the collective. Afterwards, we analyse different social instances where these emotions arise and are shared, together with particular psychological processes with emerging properties in them. The main purpose is to address the study on emotions at different levels with a special emphasis on social contexts, and to include the analysis of the negative side of self-transcendence and collective rituals and gatherings.
