From words to deeds. Media democratization and public media in Ecuador

Abstract:

This article makes a descriptive-comparative analysis of the development and decline of public media in Ecuador taking as a reference four out of five Media Development Indicators of Unesco (2008) related to: freedom of expression, pluralism, training, and institutional strengthening. It identifies weaknesses and administrative errors in this communication sector in light of the frame proposed by Unesco. The democratization of communication is a failed attempt in Ecuador. In the media map there is no consolidation of public media and, on the contrary, there is stability in the private media sector. The absence of a journalistic management model, distant from power, is one of the main causes. The Ecuadorian case may be useful for other contexts.
