Functional training and recreational in elderly: Influence on capacities and physical skills

Abstract:

Introduction: Functional training involves preparing the organism biomechanically, emphasizing the daily movements of the subject, which together with recreational activities can physically and psycho-socially empower the elderly. Objective: To improve some capacities and physical skills through functional exercises and recreational activities in order to promote the life quality in older adults. Methods: The population of 36 elderly adults (65-81 years) of the "Mi Amigo Divino" center is diagnosed, applying various tests of capacities and physical skills (muscular strength of upper and lower limbs, Flexibility, Resistance, Balance and Agility), before and after implementing an individualized functional program for six months. Results: In all the tests a percentage decrease is evidenced in the worst qualitative qualifications studied (Bad and Regular), and a percentage increase in the best grades (Good, Very Good and Excellent) as part of the posttest. The Calculation of Proportions for Related Samples evidenced significant differences in the inferences majorities. Conclusions: Functional training as an alternative to physical conditioning, in conjunction with the recreational activities implementation, allows the enhancement of capacities and physical skills in the elderly.
