Fuzzy and PID Controllers Performance Analysis for a Combined-Cycle Thermal Power Plant

Abstract:

A combined-cycle thermal power plant is one of the conventional generating units with high performance and the lower greenhouse gas emission produced. In this proposal, a conventional proportional-integral controller (PI) and a fuzzy controller are designed and applied for controlling a boiler of a combined-cycle thermal power plant. The aim of this paper is to analyze the control strategies under study to determine the controller that has a better performance in terms of fossil fuel consumption and conventional index performance as settling time, overshoot, and steady-state error. The research work includes the design and evaluation of a dynamic model boiler which includes all variables considered in the dynamic behavior of a combined-cycle thermal power plant. The results show that the fuzzy controller has a better performance than the conventional PI controller. Indeed, the fuzzy controller allows minimizing fossil fuel consumption, which is one of its most significant advantages, because the operating cost is reduced, and the greenhouse gases are mitigated.
