Gait dual-task activities and mild cognitive impairment in the elderly analyzed through a Tele-Rehab platform

Abstract:

Cognitive impairment affects a representative number of elderly worldwide while, emerging technologies are being used to facilitate the conservancy of functionality in this population; however, access can be a limitation in developing countries. The aim of the study was, to identify the difference in the execution of a series of dual task exercises in the elderly, with and without cognitive impairment. To measure the accuracy of the performance of exercises executed by a control (no MCI) and an experimental group (MCI), were compared to the gold standard, values provided by the reference avatar, built on the Telerehabilitation platform “Kushkalla”. The platform uses inertial sensors, a kinetic camera for deep shots and the graphic software designed for this purpose. Each group had 5 older adults. Main findings show that 4 out of 5 dual task exercises, were better performed by the control group; however, the exercise better performed by the MCI group is considered more complex, which could be given by factors associated with age and adaptation developed by this population over the years.
