Gaps regarding requirements engineering protocol: A preliminary empirical study

Abstract:

Background: Research in Requirements Engineering (RE) has increased significantly in the last few years, due to requirements are the first primary input into the software development process. However, there remain severe problems regarding requirements that even have caused the failure of several software development projects. Aim: To structure an artifact that provides a panoramic view of problems regarding the RE, its causes and the characteristics of solutions proposed. Method: We conduct the preliminary stages of a systematic mapping study (SMS). Results: From the information available on 8 primary studies we find that implicit activities of requirements engineering have been subject to an arduous research work, which has been intensified over the last years. Conclusions: Despite the importance of RE in the software development process and a significant amount of research carried out in this field; there is no a robust model to guide the practice of RE based on a vast base of empirical knowledge.
