Gender gap in computing: A preliminary empirical study

Abstract:

The presence of women is significantly lower in the work and academic context regarding computer science. The scarce empirical evidence based on experiments and the lack of conclusive results in this regard motivates us to ask ourselves if: Are there dierences in programming skills associated with gender?. In order to answer this question, we statistically analyzed the data obtained from seven experimental replications. These replications corresponding to an experiment in which the code external quality is analyzed through the application of test-driven development in contrast to traditional techniques. We concluded that the gender does not have an influence on the programmers’ eectiveness.
