Genetic improvement of Pinus cubensis. 1. Estimates of heritability and genetic gain for wood production.

Abstract:

A half-sib progeny trial with 26 families of P. cubensis in Cuba was evaluated at 10 years from planting. Total height, diameter at breast height and total volume over bark had broad-sense heritabilities of 0.842-0.964, narrow-sense heritabilities of 0.551-0.857 and individual heritabilities of 0.238-0.673. The genetic gain was 0.0036 m 3/year for the mean annual increment of total volume over bark, equivalent to a superiority of 43.2 m 3/ha at the end of the rotation.
