Geochemical evolution of a back-arc basin: the Tyrrhenian Sea during the Pliocene
Abstract:
The basalts recovered in the Vavilov basin during ODP Leg 107 show compositional variations with time from E-MORB type tholeiites (site 655B) towards lavas displaying calc-alkaline characteristics showing a LILE/HFSE enrichment and a negative Nb anomaly (site 651A). This indicates the influence of LILE-rich fluids released from the subducted slab on the composition of mantle source under the back-arc spreading area. Thus the magmatic evolution of the Tyrrhenian sea records in influence of the Ionian subduction, and then its possible southeastwards retreat. There is an abridged English version. -English summary
