Geodiversity: Concept, assessment and territorial aplication. the case of Tiermes-Caracena (Soria)

Abstract:

In this work a review of the geodiversity concept and the studies developed in Spain is made. A restrictive concept of geodiversity have dominated during the last years and the geodiversity have been identified with geological diversity. In this work geodiversity is considerate like a broader concept than mere geological diversity, and is defined by the constituent elements in the physical environment, which participate in the richness of biotopes, ecosystems or landscapes. A broad definition, including all abiotic elements (geological, relief, soils, hydrographical), processes and relations of the natural system, as well as the human processes, is proposed. A simple index is developed to assets the geodiversity to local scale. From a geomorphological units delimitation the geodiversity is classified in five classes. The work have been applied to the Tiermes-Caracena area, at the Soria Province, a assessment of geodiversity get used to be useful for management at local scale.
