Geographic information systems and land use change: a case study of afforestation in the Elgin area

Abstract:

A geographic information system was used to investigate relationships between the distribution of conifer plantations in 1981, the altitude, and the land capability class around Elgin in the Grampian region. The proportion of available land which is afforested in each combination of altitude and land class derived from the GIS was used to calculate an index of the relative probability of afforestation being a suitable use of land of each specified type. These probabilities were compared with the pattern of afforestation that took place between 1981 and 1984. Agreement between the pattern of afforestation and geographic pattern of relative probabilities was close and supported the suggestion and physical conditions of land to forestry.
