Geomining heritage as a tool to promote the social development of rural communities

Abstract:

Mining sites are often embedded in places of special nature and features such as geology, topography, geomorphology, rivers and a unique landscape accompanied by its related biodiversity. The closure of a mine is an opportunity to develop a geomining heritage aimed at the sustainable use of the territory, considering that many sites of ex-mining activities have already been declared World Heritage sites or Geoparks for their geological and mining values. In addition, there are sites with particular characteristics that make them heritage sites. We pay special attention to the RUMYS Project which covers the Gold Route in Ecuador, the Estrada Real in Brazil, the Route of Marble in Portugal, the Route of the Salt in Spain and others.
