Germination and hardseededness in Stylosanthes hamata (Leguminosae)
Abstract:
A relatively similar and constant germination response over a wide range of temperatures (22-45°C) was found among different accessions. Variations from this general pattern of germination may be related to specific requirements of the growing environment. A wide range of variation for hard seed content was observed among the different studied accessions within the species. This variation was not related to the place of origin. In general, growing environments with a high field temperature during flowering and seed development promoted high levels of seed coat impermeability in the species. That the marked variation in hardseededness among tetraploid accessions may be associated with their high competitive ability, since these plants grow as weeds in their natural environments.
