3D reconstruction technologies for using in dangerous environments with lack of light: A comparative analysis

Abstract:

In this paper is presented a comparison of 3D reconstruction technologies focused in its application for scanning dangerous environments and collapsed structures with lack of light in order to support emergency teams in an initial evaluation of the interest area. These approaches can be used to reduce the risk of injury to people who will access the rescue zone. Three kind of technologies are used to accomplish the 3D reconstruction comparison: Light Detection and Ranging based sensors (LIDAR), KINECT sensor V2 and a ZED stereo camera, evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. The sensors are localized over a rotating platform in order to obtain data that are processed through MATLAB to build 3D images of the environment that could be evaluated by rescuers. Moreover, a detailed explanation of data acquisition and treatment is performed. Finally, some experiments are done in order to compare different technologies performance and the viability of the proposes is analyzed.
