Glacier Hazard: The Case of Secondary Lahars in Yambo Rumi Ravine at Chimborazo Volcano (Ecuador)
Abstract:
Meteorological data recorded on the Antisana glacier (located 130km NE from Chimborazo) indicate that 2015 has been the second warmest year on the record: 2005-2015. Also, since June 2015, Ecuador has been affected by “El Niño”, which has augmented the adverse effects on glaciers (Francou et al 2004). The increase in temperature on the snow/ice surfaces accelerated the melting of the icecap. Besides, the glacier has lost 12% of its area since 1997 due to climatic warming. This reduction has not only been observed on Chimborazo’s icecap, but also on other icecap volcanoes in Ecuador (Cáceres, 2010).
