Global change in Northeast Argentine: The Tucumán province

Abstract:

With 20% of the surface of the country, the 12% of the population lives in Northwest Argentina (NOA). Tucumán has a rugged topography of strong altitudinal clines (from 180 to 7,084m a.s.l.) where a series of plant formations, animal species and environmental services have been developed, those have been replaced through time by intensive agriculture, extensive livestock, a nascent industry and some urban areas. The unplanned use of natural resources (including water, soil, forest, mineral resources, among others) in time, has brought the region to a serious environmental situation that can not qualify as sustainable. If we add to this scenario the effects of climate change, the region shows a state of global change that could affect both lasting resources and economic activities, with which the region has based its economy.
