Grafting polymerization induced by gamma-rays

Abstract:

This chapter discusses the modification of polymers to change the functionality of polymers, where grafting is one of the most promising methods. In principle, graft copolymerization is an attractive procedure to impart a variety of functional groups to a polymer with potential applications and focuses on the interest of ionizing radiation. Gamma radiation has been shown particularly useful for functionalizing surfaces via radical polymerization. Methods involving one or two steps and pre-irradiation or direct irradiation have been developed. The absorbed dose, monomer concentration, reaction time and temperature determine the degree of grafting and therefore, structure and properties of the grafted polymer. © 2013 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
