Greenhouses in Venezuela: Current status and development prospects

Abstract:

This review analyzes the evolution of the greenhouse industry in Venezuela. The first part shows the number of hectares that are currently engaged to the production under greenhouses in several continents. This allows showing that Venezuela still has a production and growth incipient with four regions that are defined as the most developed in commercial production. Nationally, the progress and current status in terms of technology used in greenhouses are described (seeds, plastic films, structures, technical capacity). It is discussed that the development of the greenhouse production industry in Venezuela should be directed towards five aspects: Strengthening national industry, professional and technical training, crop diversification, environmental damage assessment and research and technology development.
