H-plane horn array using low-loss rectangular waveguide at THz frequencies


Abstract:

Horn antennas working at THz frequencies cannot be designed using conventional, e.g. rectangular or circular, metallic waveguides. This is because high losses on non-ideal conductors at THz frequencies lead to design horn antennas with a poor performance at these frequencies. To avoid this problem, this paper presents the design of antennas in the THz band by means of a new rectangular waveguide. This waveguide is formed by a 1D-EBG structure on side walls which decreases the attenuation of the waveguide at THz frequencies. By using this new waveguide, this paper presents the design of a power divider and an H-plane horn antenna in the THz band. In addition, both devices are combined to form an array of H-plane horn antennas with a good performance. © 2011 EurAAP.
