HOT BAND MATERIAL PERFORMANCE PROFILE IMPROVEMENT IN NARROW WIDTH FOR GALVANIZED PRODUCTS
Abstract:
Plants in TERNIUM Mexico had a chronic profile issue with the hot band material in smaller widths than 900 mm, being the most important, the profile under< 25 microns and strip borders deformations (cat ears); this material is used in home appliance market in galvanized plants. Therefore, this project was developed intended to improve the profile in narrow material through process adjustments: changes in the finishing mill cooling system, production program rules standardization, changes in mechanical crowns of the finishing mill work rolls, reductions in cycle times and timebetween bar to bar, and dimensional changes of the transfer bar. As a result of the project there was a reduction of scrap material, improving the strip crown of the hot band from values of 25 microns and less to 50 microns average and passing from a build up [1] historical defects of 0.58% to 0.25% of the galvanized production after the improvements, highlighting the last 4 months with 0% of defects.
