Hardness evaluation of 88cu-4pb-4sn-4zn alloy by mechanical alloying with oxidizing atmosphere

Abstract:

The search of new materials with properties such as resistance to high temperatures, wear resistance, rigidity, and lightweight, using technological processes with several advantages is always an important subject to make a product at optimum cost. We study mechanical alloying procedure, it is a powder mixture placed in the ball mill subject to high energy collision from the balls, for producing metallic powder particles in a solid state. The Vickers hardness test was used to evaluate copper alloy with 4% Pb, 4% Sn and 4% Zn, in controlled conditions: atmosphere, sintering temperatures and milling times. Results in two experiment sets evidences a relation between parameters of sintering temperature (800 and 900 °C) and milling times of 3, 6 and 9 h. The average hardness obtained for copper alloy was 53.41 HV.
