Hematologic profile of juvenile arapaima gigas maintained in captivity conditions in the ecuadorian amazon
Abstract:
Hematology is a useful tool, which generally indicates the animal health status and provides information about the immune status of individuals. This research goal was to determinate the hematological values of juvenile Paiches (Arapaima gigas), kept in captivity in three different places situated 561, 602 and 608 m.a.s.l. This research was carried out in the Ecuadorian Amazon region, provinces of Napo and Pastaza. The population at study was 300 animals, with 20% sampling effort. The individuals are 11 months old, with an average weight of 10 kg and 97 cm of size, without gender identification and apparently healthy. 57 samples were processed in total, and analyzed by manual methods in the laboratory with the following results: (i) Red series: hematocrit 30%; hemoglobin 10 g/dl; erythrocytes 1,97 106/μl; VCM 162,1 fl; CCMH 33,1 g/dl; thrombocytes 199,4 103/μl. (ii) White series: leukocytes 10.558 103/μl; neutrophils 49,5% - 5.188 /μL; lymphocytes 27,32% - 2.881/μL; monocytes 17,58% - 1.850/μl; eosinophils 3,38% - 364,3/μl; basophils 2,2% - 224,2/μl. Reaching to the conclusion that: the values obtained are similar to previously documented findings in other countries as Peru and Brazil and that there is also similarity between the three altitudinal zones, which confirms that these data will be a reference source in terms of blood parameters for this fish species in Ecuador.
