Hepatitis induced by propylthiouracil.
Abstract:
This is the case of a 41-year-old woman with hyperthyroidism (T sub(3) = 600 ng/100 ml; T sub(4) = 32 ug/dl; TSH = 0.6 mu/l) who when first treated with propylthiouracil presented with hyperbilirubinaemia and raised transaminase values; these levels returned to normal when the drug was withdrawn. After treatment was again started the same features reappeared, this time with a low prothrombin and clouding of consciousness. When the drug was stopped and conventional treatment for liver failure instituted, the patient improved. Liver biopsy showed signs of cholestasis.
