Human-centred design

Abstract:

Most people are familiar with the negative consequences of poorly designed technology: websites with an overly complicated menu structure or extremely unattractive apps. We know that it is important that design fits the needs and preferences of the users as closely as possible. Methods from human-centred design (HCD) can be used to achieve this. In this chapter, HCD is introduced. After that, the rationale behind and specific methods for requirements, prototyping and formative evaluation are provided. Throughout the chapter, a case study on the design of a smartwatch for seniors is used to illustrate the application of these methods.
