Hydration of monoterpenes over zeolites
Abstract:
Hydration of both α-pinene and camphene, using dealuminated mordenite and faujasite-type zeolites as catalysts were studied. Commercial zeolites were modified by hydrothermal treatment for faujasite and acid treatment for mordenite, respectively, to be used as catalysts. When α-pinene was used as the starting reactant, isomerization products and terpenic alcohols were obtained, α-terpineol being the main alcohol. With camphene as the reactant, the reaction was more selective towards terpenic alcohols; in this case, the main products were borneol and isoborneol with a minor proportion of fenchilic alcohols.
