Hydrocarbon potential of an Island Arc Summit Basin, New Hebrides Arc, Southwest Pacific

Abstract:

The Vanlkolo basin In the north-central New Hebrides Island arc Is a north-south trending basin that has an area greater than 14,000 km2 and contains middle Miocene and younger sediments as much as 6 km thick. The synclinal structure Is bounded on the east by a faulted volcanic complex, and on the west by an upbowed, mostly volcanic arch with folded and faulted volcaniclastic, sedimentary, and carbonate cover. A few small Igneous Intrusions pierce . the sed Imentary fill near the eastern and western boundaries. Two major fault trends-NWSE and NE-SW on the western and southern parts, respectlvely-have been mapped. There are suffIcient sedimentary sections and entrapping structures to consider the Vanlkolo basin a petrol eum prospect.
