Hypothyroidism in pregnant women who came to Centro de Especialidades Central Cuenca, period 2016


Abstract:

The aim of the current study was to find out the prevalence of hypothyroidism in pregnant women who came to Centro de Especialidades Central Cuenca during the 2016 term. The research was done in descriptive and cross mode. The universe was formed by all pregnant women assessed and the sample taken was 410 pregnant women. The data obtained in medical records was gathered in a previously designed form and the statistical analysis was done using SPSS statistical software. The prevalence for hypothyroidism was 33.4% with a 29.9 year-old average age, mainly found in married-high school educated-urban area resident women. 37.6% of the population was in the 11th-to-20th week of pregnancy, 73.9% were women with previous births and caesarean section was the most-common pattern in birth-giving procedures. Premature birth was the most-prevailing complication with a 6.6% incidence. In conclusion, the prevalence for hypothyroidism in studied-pregnant women was high compared with other studies, highly threatening fetal-maternal health and increasing the risk for complications.
