ICARE MODEL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF WRITING SKILLS IN ENGLISH TEACHING


Abstract:

This research analyzed the results of the application of the ICARE Model for the development of writing skills in students of the first year of the Chemical Engineering degree course at the University Universidad ¨ Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo ¨. ICARE includes five essential elements of a good learning experience: Introduction, Connection, Application, Reflection, and Extension. This research involved a population of 72 students in the 2021 academic year. The sample was divided into an experimental class and a control class, each with 36 students. Cluster random sampling technique was used to select the sample. The instrument used in this research is the writing test. T-tests for comparison of means were performed to verify the significant differences between the grades of both groups and Pearson’s Chi-square and Likelihood Ratio tests to verify the relationship between the group variable and the evaluative categories. The results of the research revealed that the use of ICARE contributed to the development of students’ English language writing skills.
