INCIDENCE IN ADULT PEOPLE OF THE METABOLIC SYNDROME: PREVALENCE, DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
Abstract:
This paper describes the metabolic syndrome in adults, its clinical and epidemiological characteristics, treatment alternatives, diagnosis, and prevention currently available, through a review of the literature. A narrative review was performed through an advanced search from articles of high scientific prestige between the period 2017-2021, selecting those containing information on metabolic syndrome in adults. As a result, the authors were able to describe in detail the clinical-epidemiological characteristics and treatment alternatives, diagnoses, and prevention mechanisms of metabolic syndrome in adults based on current evidence. It was concluded that the metabolic syndrome is a complex pathophysiological state that is produced mainly by an imbalance in caloric intake and energy expenditure, also affected by the genetic/epigenetic composition of the individual, the predominance of sedentary lifestyle over physical activity, and other factors such as intestinal microbiota and the composition and quality of food.
