INFORMAL TEXTILE AND CLOTHING SECTOR: AN ANALYSIS OF JOB SKILLS
Abstract:
The informal economy refers to people and companies that, in practice, are not protected by formal agreements and therefore pose challenges to workers, economic units and governments. Therefore, this research aims to characterize the working con-ditions under which the members of the informal textile and clothing sector in the province of Tungurahua work. The research is non-experimental since the phenomena are studied in their natural state in order to later analyze and explain them. It is of a mixed type, with emphasis on the qualitative approach. It was found that the sector develops in a submerged economy in multifaceted aspects such as low income, wages, lack of social protection, poor job security, gender inequality, insufficient professional training, a legal tax framework that hinders the transition to formality, absence of equal opportunities due to lack of skills. The results obtained show the heterogeneity in terms of development on the part of employers, self-employed and informal sector workers, hence the need to allow access to new knowledge, skills and abilities, under a scheme that breaks the structure of common contents for all.
