INVESTIGATION OF GRINDING WHEEL BEHAVIOR DURING LUBRICATED GRINDING OF HARDENED AND ANNEALED STEELS.

Abstract:

Specially designed composite grinding wheels were used in a Scanning Electron Microscopy (and Electron Microprobe) program to evaluate the mechanisms of wear flat growth under lubricated grinding conditions. Four lubricants were evaluated and, in all cases, wear flat growth occurred by the same wear mechanisms which act during dry surface grinding. The effectiveness of a lubricant is shown to be related to the wear flat distribution on the wheel periphery.
